Ann Arbor to Hear Highlights on National Gun Control Debate
Ann Arbor democrats will preview gun control debate over food and drinks at Sava’s Restaurant

ANN ARBOR – On Tuesday, March 26th members and friends of the Ann Arbor Democratic Party host a gun control mixer – to keep the conversation about stopping gun violence moving forward at Sava’s Restaurant.  The fact that this is a complex problem cannot be an excuse for inaction.  The mixer is being held to support a local Ann Arbor business.  It is also appropriately themed given the heated debate nationally and will give way to spirited dialog on ways that we can prevent acts of violence in our community and country.

WHO:  Members and friends of the Ann Arbor Democratic Party, elected officials, interested citizens.

WHAT:  A Gun Control Mixer – a regularly scheduled monthly mixer, with a timely theme, in a casual environment, to support a local Ann Arbor business.  The Party will purchase a few selections from the menu for guests to share.  Guests will also be able to take advantage of special happy hour prices on beverages while getting to know other Democrats.  Ann Arbor Democratic Party monthly mixers are always free of charge.  Your contribution in any amount is greatly appreciated.  Contributions help the Party cover costs for meetings, advertising, supplies, and special events.

WHEN:  Tuesday, March 26, 2013 – 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM.

WHERE:  Sava’s Restaurant, 216 South State Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48104 (located between Liberty and Washington) 734-623-2233.

Ann Arbor Democratic Party meetings and mixers regularly attract our Congressman, the Mayor, numerous City Council Members, Washtenaw County Commissioners, the Sheriff, members of the State House and Senate, and other government leaders who wish to connect with engaged citizens.

MICHIGAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY (MDP) CHAIR MARK BREWER AND

CHALLENGER LON JOHNSON TO VISIT ANN ARBOR EARLY IN

CAMPAIGNS TO LEAD MICHIGAN DEMOCRATS

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2013 AT 9:30 AM

Join members of the Ann Arbor Democratic Party as they host MDP Chair Mark Brewer and challenger Lon Johnson at the Ann Arbor Community Center, 625 North Main Street on Saturday, February 9, 2013 from 9:30 AM to 12 Noon.

Other speakers will include: Congressman John D. Dingell; State of Michigan Board of Education President John Austin; former Michigan State AFL-CIO President and Candidate for 12th District Democratic Party Chair Mark Gaffney; and U-M Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute Director Dr. John Callewaert.

ANN ARBOR – February 7, 2013 – Ann Arbor Democrats will be among the first in Michigan to see MDP Chair Mark Brewer face off against challenger Lon Johnson.  Brewer has served as MDP Chair since 1995 and is considered one of the most experienced State Party Chairs in the nation.  Lon Johnson has been involved in political campaigns for over 20 years, ran for the Michigan House in 2012 nearly defeating a Republican in a tough district for Democrats, and is married to Obama 2012 Deputy Campaign Manager Julianna Smoot.  At the Ann Arbor Democratic Party meeting this Saturday, both candidates will present cases explaining why Ann Arbor Democrats should elect them as Chair at the MDP Convention at Cobo Center in Detroit February 22nd-23rd.

The Ann Arbor Democratic Party will meet at the Ann Arbor Community Center, 625 North Main Street on Saturday, February 9, 2013 from 9:30 AM to 12 Noon.  The Party will serve a light breakfast from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM while attendees network and mingle with guest speakers.  The meeting runs from 10:00 AM to 12 Noon.  All Ann Arbor Democratic Party meetings including the general membership meeting this Saturday, February 9th are free and open to the public.

Ann Arbor Democratic Party Chairman Mike Henry explains, “This is the first serious challenge to Mark Brewer’s leadership in about a decade.  I am eager to hear exactly why Lon Johnson thinks his leadership will strengthen us in Michigan.  And more importantly – exactly how he thinks he can mount and execute a statewide program better than Mark.”

On Tuesday, in a letter to party members, the entire Michigan Congressional Delegation backed Lon Johnson of Kalkaska to replace longtime Chairman Mark Brewer.

In a letter from his congressional committee, Congressman John Dingell wrote, “I am concerned that Michigan is a blue state that is increasingly becoming red in representation.  The future of too many things we care about are at stake.  Only with a diverse, vibrant and energized party can we hope to gain victories in 2014 and beyond.  I believe there is one candidate that can do just that:  Lon Johnson.”

In a matter of hours, after Lon Johnson’s announcement went out to party members, Mark Brewer sent a letter detailing his case for another term as MDP Chair.  On Wednesday, Brewer also sent a letter listing his endorsements.

Henry continues, “Ann Arbor residents won’t find a more open or robust forum in the city to engage leaders and elected officials regarding our future and the policies they advocate.  Every month we present a unique opportunity for citizens to have direct contact with decision makers and the people who influence them.”

This Saturday, the Ann Arbor Democratic Party will also host four (4) other key speakers:

1.  Congressman John Dingell will speak on a host of topics affecting Michigan and the nation;

2.  State of Michigan Board of Education President John Austin will address concerns about how Governor Rick Snyder is handling Michigan’s educational and budgetary challenges (Austin is rumored to be a likely challenger to Snyder in Michigan’s upcoming 2014 Gubernatorial race);

3.  U-M environmental sustainability expert Dr. John Callewaert will educate attendees on the effects of hydraulic fracturing in Washtenaw County;

4.  Former AFL-CIO President Mark Gaffney will be in attendance to discuss the state of worker’s rights and collective bargaining in Michigan (Gaffney is also a candidate for Chair of the 12th District Democratic Party).

The Ann Arbor Democratic Party meetings regularly attract the Mayor, numerous City Council Members, Washtenaw County Commissioners, members of the State House and Senate, and other government leaders who wish to connect with engaged citizens.
