A Panel Discussion of Adoption By Same-Gender Parents

You are invited to take part in an informative conversation about an important topic, Friday, September 21, 2012, from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. at the Malletts Creek Branch Library.

Adoption by Same-Gender Parents:

Law and the well-being of families

This panel discussion will consider an issue that is at the crossroads of public opinion and public policy, law and morals. Panelists will present facts and offer insight about: 

  • The state of the law in Michigan and elsewhere pertaining to adoption by same-gender parents;
  • The status of pending litigation seeking to effect changes to the current legal framework; and
  • Clinical studies and social research into the well-being of children and families headed by same-gender parents.

Confirmed panelists include:

Dana M. Nessel, Esq.

Ms. Nessel is the attorney of record in the case DeBoer vs. Michigan, a federal lawsuit that aims to overturn Michigan’s adoption code and the state’s ban on same-sex marriage. Ms. Nessel will discuss current Michigan law and the latest developments in her litigation.

Sinead King

Ms. King is a Barrister with the London firm of Principal Chambers. Ms. King will discuss adoption in England, and the public conversations that were had as the law was being developed.

Dr. Orli Avi-Yonah

Dr. Avi-Yonah is a clinical psychiatrist with a focus on adolescent and child mental health. Dr. Avi-Yonah will discuss the current clinical understanding of the social and psychological outlook of children in families headed by traditional parents and same-gender parents.

Attorney Michael Woodyard will moderate.
