A2 Issues: On the Horizon

The Council’s working session June 13 involved three different staff briefings on issues that could affect us all: redistricting of the city, street maintenance and sidewalk millages, and annexation of township “islands”.

Redistricting

The City Charter requires that the City be redistricted after each national census.  The census numbers came back a few months ago, and the City Clerk has drafted a redistricting plan.

During the last 10 years, the First Ward’s population increased compared to the other four wards (the overall population of Ann Arbor decreased between the 2000 and 2010 censuses, but only by 90 people).  This population increase in the First Ward means that the First Ward will have its boundaries decreased.  All of this change is in the downtown.  Each of the other wards will have boundary changes – and each will receive a portion of the First Ward’s current population. Town Hall Meeting to Discuss Public Act 4 (Emergency Managers)

The Washtenaw Community Action Team (WCAT) is hosting a Town Hall Meeting at the Ann Arbor Community Center on Saturday June 25th (10:30am-12:30pm) to discuss Public Act 4 and the statewide initiative to repeal the law.

Public Act 4 is a new law that empowers the Governor of the State of Michigan to appoint Emergency Managers (EM) to communities placed in the receivership of the state. The EM has broad, unchecked powers to sell public assets, close schools, shred public contracts and agreements, and dissolve governments and remove elected officials. A $1.7 billion tax cut for businesses has made a number of Washtenaw County municipalities and school districts at risk of receivership. (more…)

Online Petition to Fight Gov. Snyder’s Devastating Cuts

Posted on: June 1st, 2011 by Erica Ackerman 1 Comment

We need to stand up and tell Governor Snyder that devastating cuts to public education, eliminating the earned income tax credit (EITC), and sharply raising taxes on our seniors is no way to “re-invent” Michigan. It’s not “shared sacrifice” and it’s no way to create jobs in Michigan.

Help fight Gov. Snyder’s budget proposal. Sign the online petition and tell the Governor that we won’t stand for a $2 billion tax cut for special interests while our seniors, children, middle-class families, and low-wage workers suffer. Click here to sign the wiredforchange.com petition.
